NASIBA HAFIZ DEBUTS HER EMPOWERING SPRING 2018 COLLECTION PLUS A “UNIVERSAL” LIPSTICK
Nasiba Hafiz unveiled her all-new Spring 2018 collection at the Odd Piece in Dubai’s creative hub of Al Serkal over the weekend. Featuring leopard-print slips, retro polka dot dresses, and vibrant, flowy separates, the #NHRoars collection is an ode to “the unapologetically fierce women of the world who dares to speak her truth, who dares to feel comfortable in her skin, and who dares to stand out in a crowd.” The empowering offering comes during the Post-Weinstein era and #MeToo movement sweeping the Internet, and serves as an unprecedented sartorial statement. So it’s only fitting then that the Saudi Arabian womenswear designer unveiled a universal red lipstick meant to suit each skin tone to accompany the collection. After all, a bold red lip is a long-standing symbol of empowerment and strength. The designer also flexed her homeware muscle to churn out a line-up of intoxicating patchouli-scented candles that come in a luxurious retro glass, which can be used long after the candle burns out, as well as a packet of match sticks designed in collaboration with Alaa Balkhy (the brainchild behind Fyunka).
As for the campaign, Hafiz collaborated with three women from Jeddah, whom she felt represented the powerful “Nasiba Hafiz woman” to model the Spring 2018 pieces. Shot in Balkhy’s Jeddah home and styled by Sotra founder, Nouf Hakeem, the result is a striking set of contemporary portraits with a mid-century feel.
It isn’t the first time the philanthropic designer teams up with other creatives for a good cause. In 2015, Hafiz joined forces with contemporary womenswear designer Arwa Al Banawi on a selection of Barbies dressed up in made-to-measure outfits by Hafiz and Al Banawi, with all proceeds going to the children’s orphanage charity, Aytam Altaif.
